KARACHI: Director Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) Professor Adib Rizvi has called for setting up a dedicated cancer treatment center in public sector.
Inaugurating the three day conference on prevalence and treatment of cancer at the SIUT, the Director of Institute Professor Dr Adib Rizvi presented a health care model of his Institute which is successful functioning in the country for last four decades.
He said SIUT which is consider as premier institution providing free treatment to specialized fields of medicine also provide free of cost ontological treatment.

Giving details of causes of cancer, Dr Rizvi attributed smoking, obesity, exposure to toxics, unhealthy diet and infection are main contributing forces for causing cancer.
He said his Institute treated 27000 patients of cancer in the previous year and over 3000 patients were treated in the same period.
The conference was jointly organized by SIUT and American Society of Oncology (ASCO) and attended by cancer specialists from Europe, North America and also from within the country.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Pervaiz Rahman the visiting cancer specialist from Pittsburgh School of Medicine gave an exhaustive presentation about the lungs cancer which he declared as most common ailment in developing countries. He also held smoking and use of tobacco as the main factor.
Dr Rahman said in the United States lungs cancer is the second most cause of death after heart diseases.
